Located in Acajutla, Sonsonate department, Los Cóbanos is El Salvador's only beach with an extensive coral reef, declared a protected marine area in 2007. The reef — dominated by Porites lobata coral, documented nowhere else in the country — acts as a natural breakwater, forming calm-water pools ideal even for children and beginner swimmers.
More than 140 fish species and 35 types of coral live in its waters, alongside two historic shipwrecks — the S.S. Douglas and the Sheriff Gone — that have become dive sites. Between November and February, the area also sits along the humpback whale migration route, and the local fishing community runs guided whale-watching tours.
